Why your store search misses products you already sell

An empty search does not always mean a missing product. A synonym, an unavailable size or a detail missing from the title can break the connection between shopper intent and your catalog.

01

1. Reproduce the exact query

Copy the phrase from your zero-result report. Record the store, language, time and active filters. “Women’s trousers” and “women’s trousers size 44” are different tests. Keep explicit size, color and budget constraints.

02

2. Check the imported catalog

Find the real product name or identifier in administration. Check active status, the latest import, prices, availability and variants. A product visible on your website is not automatically present in the search index.

03

3. Compare shopper vocabulary with your catalog

Customers may search for “sneakers” while a catalog uses “sports shoes”. Check synonyms and categories. Test neighboring categories too: a broad synonym should not mix shoes, boots and sandals.

04

4. Verify sizes and variants

An available model may not be available in the requested size. Check variant mapping and stock per size. Do not ignore an explicit size merely to avoid an empty list.

05

5. Complete relevant attributes

“Shoes with thick soles” may require attributes absent from the title. Check catalog fields and photo analysis. An outsole-only or unclear photograph does not confirm every visible feature of the entire product.

06

6. Test the repair across the catalog

Use positive and negative examples: products that should appear and products that should be excluded. Cover several categories, sizes and colors. Repair retrieval rules or imports instead of boosting one product for one query.

07

7. Measure relevant discovery

Compare query volume, zero-result share and product clicks over comparable periods. Then inspect cart actions and attributable orders. Fewer empty results are useful only when the selection stays relevant.

08

Product discovery for small stores

Start with important categories and repeated real queries. Fix imports, synonyms and attributes affecting existing products before rewriting the whole catalog.

Frequently asked questions

Should every search term be added to product titles?

No. Use coherent attributes, categories and synonyms while keeping titles readable.

Is every zero-result query a bug?

No. The requested product or variant may be unavailable. Separate missing supply from import or retrieval problems.

Practical guides for real store problems

Fix products that cannot be found, improve incomplete catalog data and measure the outcome.
